The Alumni Reunion of Union Christian College, Aluva was held on 9th November, 2019. The day started with a Memorial Service in the college chapel at 9.00 AM. The public meeting was arranged at Varkey Memorial Assembly Hall at 10.00 AM with Sri. Sajen Peter IAS as the Chief Guest. Sri Sajen Peter is alumnus (1969-72 BA English) and retired Deputy Chief Secretary, Govt. of Kerala. He was proud that Union Christian College held onto its traditions and core values even when changes kept happening all around. The college has served the society well in the past hundred years and will have to reinvent itself to face the challenges of higher education and remain relevant for the next hundred years. The meeting was presided over by the Principal Dr. David Saj Mathew. The Manager Rev. Thomas John presented the centum projects in nutshell. On behalf of the Old Students’ Association, General Secretary Adv. A. Jayasankar, Executive Secretary Dr. Jenee Peter and Vice President Adv. A. Ayub Khan spoke on the occasion.
In his speech, the Chief Guest remembered his college days and the continued interactions with teachers like Prof. E Narayanan Nambiar. ‘Though I studied in several institutions, I have always considered myself a UCian” he said. His father supported him despite much opposition from many others, when he took the Third Group for Pre-degree. Teachers and classmates thought of him as a very lazy student till he received the first year exam marks. Interestingly, as a student he attended the golden jubilee celebrations of the college in 1971 when teachers reminisced about how the college became a refugee camp during the Great Flood, 1924. History repeats!!
Sri. Sajen Peter also honoured the senior most retired teachers and non-teaching staff of the college. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes and the Prof. E. Narayanan Nambiar memorial trophies for English Elocution and Malayalam Elocution, Prof. A.K. Abdul Kareem Memorial Quiz trophy and Sri. K. Narayana Menon Memorial Award. The staff who retired this year were honoured by OSA on the occasion.
This was followed by reminiscences by the old students. Teaser of a web series to support women with psychological tips, a venture by the old students of the Department of Psychology (2004-07) was launched on the occasion. The greatest surprise of the day was mangalaganam on the founder teachers sung by 93 year old Ms. Aleyamma Varghese (1939-42 B.Sc Mathematics Batch) which she had first sung in 1941 during their farewell.
